Wet Basement/Crawl space

Excess water around your home's foundation can cause significant damage over time. It can wash away the soil taking away from the soils support of your foundation leaving it to settle and crack. It can allow build up of hydrostatic pressure that can break through the foundation wall and seep into the basement or build up and pour over the slab at the finger space. The costs of interior water damage can be extremely expensive to address while still needing to address the root cause first which is the water building up around your home creating the drainage issue.

Erosion of Landscape

Here in North Georgia it is easy for the topsoil to erode if proper drainage is not implemented. Soil erosion is a gradual process that takes place when water washes away the soil particles causing the soil to deteriorate. In places where heavy water traffic is present this process can happen quickly. Areas prone to major erosion are underneath the gutters surrounding your home if they were to overflow, at the bottom of each gutters downspout, where water tends to pool until it pours over and the heavy volume washes towards lower areas, or runoff from one area of a property to another. The process of erosion will get worse over time if not properly addressed.

Pooling Water/Saturation

If you have standing or pooling of water in your yard after it rains you have poor drainage. There are multiple reasons you could have this type of drainage problem. One of the main reasons is that here in North Georgia we have clay soil which is highly compactable and doesn't allow surface water to percolate into the ground very well. Heavy foot traffic can further compact the clay soil leading to low spots in the yard where you could see water pool after heavy rains. Poor grading is another reason for low spots in the yard. Low spots in the yard where pooling of water occurs leads to the yard being saturated for a long period of time. Saturation of the soil makes it difficult for you and your family (including the dogs) to enjoy the outdoors. Saturated soil and pooling of water or standing water is also grounds for a mosquito breeding pit. Ultimately where there are low spots in the yard and no drainage system present you have a drainage problem that's affecting your quality of life and that problem will continue to exist until it is properly addressed.

Gutter System Failure

Your gutter system is really a protected path that diverts rainwater away from your home. If your gutters or downspouts clog or are in need of repairs you're at risk of receiving damage to your home. Gutters work in conjunction with the roof to protect your home from water-related issues. When gutters fail, water can back up and seep under the roof shingles, leading to rot, leaks, and water stains on your ceiling. This can weaken the roof structure, resulting in more significant problems down the line. Improper working gutter systems can also lead to erosion of the soil around your home.

A lot of times builders and drainage contractors will use thin corrugated pipe materials to do drainage installs. This is considered to be a short term style solution that will eventually fail. The pipes are known to collapse and clog easily. The most common reason for corrugated pipe system failue is clogging from roots or debris build up over time. Once a corrugated system has clogged in most cases it cannot be cleared. If the system cannot be cleared it will need to be replaced.
